Founded in 1902, Kinsai has spent three generations bringing lacquer craft pieces from the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture into everyday life. Through a collaboration between the 400-year tradition of Yamanaka lacquerware and o-lab inc., a unique bowl has been created: its softly rounded, gently taut pedestal curves inward like kagami-mochi, a traditional two-tiered New Year’s rice-cake offering, before flowing into the bowl above. The form is light, sculptural, and made possible by exceptional woodturning skill. A carefully applied fuki-urushi finish, in which lacquer is wiped into the wood to reveal and protect the grain, brings out the beauty of the zelkova, cut vertically to enhance both its character and function. An artwork made to be touched every day, this piece invites freer use, unconstrained by conventional ideas of lacquerware.
